I would like to Keep 30 daily & 3 monthly backup.

How can I reach this setting?
Do I need to set at least 1 or 2 weekly backup?

30 days and 3 monthly's will work fine.
You just need to modify your rsnapshot.conf and your crontab entries to correlate accordingly.

Something like this in the config file?

retain daily 30
retain monthly 3

The names (daily, ...) do not really matter but the order *does*. Try do
a "man rsnapshot" and search for "retain".

Now it is clear, that any kind of strings could be used.

So I can safely comment out the weekly one in rsnapshot.conf and ignore the
weekly call in cron.d/rsnapshot.

If you want to have 30 daily and 3 monthly backups, then use: (replace the
spaces with tabs)
retain daily 30
retain monthly 3

No, you don't have to have 3 backup-levels neccessarily. rsnapshot is
capable of handling any amount of backup-levels. For example you could
retain alpha 5
retain beta 5
retain gamma 7
retain delta 3
retain epsilon 5
retain zetta 7
This retain-scheme make sense, but it just should show you, that rsapshot
can handle about an infinite amount of intervals.

It's better to use 31 daily backups (named daily.0 ... daily.30); when
"monthly" is invoked then it renames daily.30 to monthly.0
